Building our brand in Europe

For the past three seasons, our club has been taking part in EuroCup Women games. We have won silver and bronze medals during the Energa Basket Liga Kobiet games. As a result, eurobasket.com has ranked us #26 among 421 teams from 45 different countries in Europe that play the top class games in their own countries.

There is no surprise which club holds the first place in the ranking. A thirteen-time Russian champion, a five-time EuroLeague Women champion and by far the most prosperous team in Europe – UMMC Ekaterinburg. The second place is held by Turkish Fenerbahce club and the third place on the podium belongs to the Spanish club, Avenida. The highest rated Polish club is Arka Gdynia (15th place). There is also Artego Bydgoszcz, which is #19 and followed by AZS AJP Gorzów Wielkopolski. And for the highlight, it is worth noting that Stelmet Zielona Góra club is the best Polish team in the men's club ranking (43rd place).

“This ranking clearly shows that women's basketball is a very popular sport and the Polish league is one of the 5-6 best leagues in Europe. After a few years of absence, our club now returns to play for medals in the EBLK basketball league and European Cup tournaments. I am proud that Gorzów has a team that is important in Europe, especially that basketball is such an extremely popular sport,” said Coach Dariusz Maciejewski.

“Everybody in our club is ambitious. We want to constantly develop and promote our brand in Europe. Our club has already participated in Euroleague twice and played EuroCup games five times. If everything goes well, we will extend the sponsorship contracts with our major sponsors for the upcoming season and we will participate in European Cup tournaments again. We are planning to advance to TOP 20 European teams and to promote our city through our good game. I hope that in a few years' time we will play in the Basketball Champions League in the new field house,” added Michał Kugler, Vice-President of our club.

During an organizational meeting, FIBA Europe abandoned the idea of finishing the suspended Euroleague and EuroCup games in September 2020. FIBA decided to end the cup tournaments without awarding any championship titles. According to the regulations, the teams will receive ranking points. What will the new European competition season look like?

It was decided that the games are to start as planned, that is in September and October with or without public participation. The restrictions of the country in which a particular team will be based will be maintained. In the event of a recurrence of the pandemic, when the games cannot start in September, they will automatically be moved to January 2021 and their characteristics will be changed. Drawings of European Cup tournaments were initially set for 17th and 18th August 2020.
