A great return to Gorzów!

It is time for an another update on our line-up for the 2020/2021 season! For Agnieszka Szott-Hejmej it will be a jubilee 25th season after which she will officially end her career in professional basketball. In the previous season in Lublin, the popular “Pysia” scored the average of 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds.

Agnieszka Szott-Hejmej started her sports career at the ZKS Stilon club. It is fair to say that “Pysia” is a Polish basketball icon because she has won a total of three medals in Polish Championships. According to FIBA’s ranking, currently she is recognized as the best Polish basketball player 3x3. During her varied career, Agnieszka Szott-Hejmej has won the Championships i.a. in Cyprus and Switzerland. Moreover, she won two silver and four bronze medals for Polish top league as well as three championships in Polish Cup.

“It is amazing that for the fourth time in our career we will be playing on the same team with Aga. We started our cooperation in 1994 at the ZKS Stilon club when she was 12 years old. We created a great team which won everything possible in children’s and youth basketball in Poland. Back then, Aga, as the most talented teen in the country, made her debut in the top league at the age of almost 15. Later, after the ZKS Stilon was dissolved, we worked together for two seasons at Ślęza Wrocław club. Unfortunately, in 2000 we went our separate ways for several years. I came back to Gorzów to the second league GTK club, laying the foundations for today's AZS while Aga won medals for Wrocław and then for Lotos Gdynia. After winning promotion to the top league in 2003, I convinced Agnieszka to come back to Gorzów and help us stay in the league,” recalls coach Dariusz Maciejewski.

“After she had returned, we worked together again for five years, rising through the ranks every year until finally, in 2008, we won the bronze medal, the first in the history of our city. Back then, Aga won the title of the Top Shot in the Polish league and got a very good offer for further sporting development which she took advantage of. 12 years have passed and we will work together again. I know that Agnieszka wants to end her 25-year career. There could not be a different place for that than Gorzów, with the coach who worked with her at the start of her basketball career. Given her fighting spirit, I know one thing. It will not be about reaping benefits, but she will do everything to make the team achieve its sporting goal,” adds the coach.

What was Agnieszka's main reason for deciding that she would spend the jubilee 25th season of her career in our Club?

“I chose Gorzów because it is my hometown. This is where I was born, where I started my adventure with basketball and took my first steps in sport. Coach Darek Maciejewski whom I know well and trust had an influence on my coming to Gorzów. I am sure he will know what position I am best at and how to use my skills for the team’s benefit," said Agnieszka Szott-Hejmej.

In the opinion of this experienced basketball player, what will the upcoming season be like and what will AZS AJP Gorzów Wielkopolski team fight for?

“I wish this season was full of surprises and great basketball games. So that as a team we could fight for the medal in Polish Championships. If we play in European Cup tournaments, my dream would be to advance to Final4. However, it is very hard to predict anything now as the situation is still uncertain. I hope we will make a cool team with character and courage. This will help us enjoy playing together in a team and as a result it will also benefit our scores,” added the new AZS AJP Gorzów basketball player.

In the new season, AZS will be a mixture of youth and experience. A team that is supposed to be Ambitious, Zestful and Successful. What does "Pysia", an experienced player, want to contribute to the team?

“I would like to share my courage and tenacity with the team. I am a player who always fights back to the ropes and never gives up. I like to earn points but also to share the ball. Depending on what the coach will need or expect, I will do my best,” ended Agnieszka Szott-Hejmej.
